I replaced my blower in about two hours. Biggest pain was splitting the blower box to get at the motor. I ended up cracking the darn thing but I was fortunate in that I had a complete assembly I got from the junk yard. I still have that cracked box in the garage. I was meaning to toss it but since there is still a good heater core in that box I have not. Nothing much of it is still usefull except that heater core. If you want me to I will hang on to it until you finish your replacement job. Althogh there is little chance of damageing a heater core during the replacement Murphy still lurks and you may have need of one if a wrench slips. If so let me know and you can have it for the shipping costs. It is from an 83.5 but I think they are the same.

Heres what my problem or at least what i think my problem is. I noticed the same symptoms. When i replaced the fuse which looked ok, and only used the wipers no problem, but when i left the heater blower on for a bit i got the problem. I think in my case and maybe yours, my heater blower motor is on it's way out. When i leave it on it draws more current that normal. The 16A fuse heats up and melts before it blows. It is no longer long enough to make a good connection between the terminals, however if you wiggle it or hit a bump it may sit just right and start working again.

does anyone know if the heater blower motor is a big job?
