Subject: Waterpump replacement on '88?
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Just came back from our last weekend trip and heard some wierd rattling/whining noises on the long 8+ hr drive home. Too tired to look into it, I left the van for a few weeks before starting my pre- winter cleanup. Then I noticed a puddle under the water pump... and the expansion tank was empty... and the water pump shaft was *very* sloppy...

Now I have a new pump ($75 CDN for a new "GRAF" brand, made in EEC), and I have the old one loose, but it appears I need to remove either the pipe heading behind the big pulley, OR the pully itself, in order to get the pump off the studs and clear the small pipe (passenger side of pump). I'm leaning toward removing the mainshaft pulley, since it would make putting the pump back in much easier. But is this a bad idea? The Bentley says 248 ft-lb for that big 30mm bolt! Any advice on this one? I've searched the archives, but found no mention of this little problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.
