Hi John

When I bought my '85 a few years back, the cable that you're dealing with had been cut from the lever mechanism and the cable end was left accessible to the right of the steering column, below the dash. A little crook was bent into the wire to allow manual operation. This may not be pretty but I've felt no compulsion to change it... then again I've installed toggle and momentary switches to replace the ignition/starter switch... and bits of copper tube and PVC here and there... and... :-)
