I camp in bear country pretty much every time I camp, and we have never had any sort of problem with bears trying to get into our occupied vehicle (30 years and LOTS of camping). Now, in our area we have black bears only. Black bears don't like dogs, and we always have a dog along when camping. The dog sleeps in the camper. During the day, we have watched black bears go through a campground, avoiding all the campsites with dogs. I have been told that grizzley bears will come into your camp just to eat the dog, so our method may not wook too well in other areas.
