In various documents from Volkswagen---official factory repair literature--the official multi-meter for VW trained mechanics is the Fluke 83. I have a page here that says this, and also I believe Joel once told me he had one of these. But the 83 is the bottom of this particular multimeter line with the Fluke 87 being the more accurate model. More accuracy is especially helpful in measuring the state of charge of your batteries, among other things. Now Fluke manufactures a special version of the Fluke 87 called the Fluke 88, which is their official "automotive" multimeter. It comes with all sorts of special probes and a special automotive instruction manual. So the ultimate VW multimeter may well be the Fluke 88.
