Hello to everyone, I’ve been fighting a problem with my ’84 water-cooled 1.9 (156,000 miles) for about 6 months now. I really need expert help. I apologize if this has been discussed before, but here goes: After driving about an hour (but not always) it begins to run very rich, hesitates, jerks, etc. After I cut the ignition and re-start, the problem clears completely. This has been getting steadily worse. My independent VW mechanic is doing his best, but is lost. He has replaced the computer (gag), the air flow box (gag), OX sensor, temp sensor, fuel pump and power supply relays, gone over the grounds (even replacing and soldering the wire terminals). He has done the air box wiring harness upgrade per bulletin 92-02 and I still have the problem. I went to an authorized VW dealer in Denver CO yesterday and they are guessing like everybody else, but will be happy to troubleshoot at $100.00 per hour! It has had a rebuilt long block (GEX of Calif.) with 7,000 on it. I’m wondering what the possibility is of needing a valve adjustment…..the thinking being that if the exaust was too wide it might “backfeed” into the intake and mess up the OX sensor?? If I can’t get this problem fixed it’s curtains for my Vanagon, and I sure hate to loose it after 9 years on the road.

Thanks in advance to any help! Ray Osterwald Bailey CO
