Volkswagen has dropped the Syncro system in all cars except T4 and Sharan, the Golf, Bora and Passat uses the new system called 4motion, which uses a Haldex-clutch, an electronically controlled clutch, which is connected to the ESP. Also Audi's A3 Quattro and Skoda's Octavia 4x4 uses this system. I guess you can read about it at http://www.volkswagen.de or at http://www.vwvortex.com
