Steve,

We had been warned that the westy a/c was inadequate, that cool air rarely
reached the front.  But we have been very pleased with our unit, and
southern Missouri gets very hot and humid too.

We never use it around town, because it really slows us down when leaving a
light.  But it's great on the highway.  We never have to run the fan on
high, which is as you noted very loud.

Maybe your unit just isn't putting out enough cold air to begin with?

I have heard from folks who attached a small fan to the front to suck cold
air forward, but that sounds like a nuisance to me.

I have found that it is important to close the front air vents, though, for
two reasons.  You don't want hot, humid air blowing on you, and it also
seems to keep the cool air from making its way forward.
