A couple of years ago, I talked to a guy that had a 1979 Rover 3500. I dont know the car well, it is a rare car in Norway, but he told me they tended to rust pretty well. We get like 5 tons of salt per square foot each winter. His car was spotless. He polished it once a month, and every oil change ended up under and inside the car. He sprayed the oil under the car, and inside the doors, fenders hatch etc. It smelled a bit oily on the inside, but that could also be from the leather conditioner.
