If you want to go with a digital meter (what I would recommend), look at the Fluke Model 12 (or what ever may be replacing it, it that model is out of production). As I remember it, it was somewhere around $100 dollars, and the only problems I have had with it was the battery failed after 4 years..... <grin>.

Another (Fluke) option would be the Model 77 meter, or whatever model has replaced it. Own both, very happy with them. I have used them for LAN, computer, Vanagon and John Deere tractor, etc. troubleshooting.
