So there are two different ways of looking at rust solutions.

One comes from hands-on experience using a product (Kool Patch) for 8 years, (including 2 1976 busses, a 1982 Vanagon, and a 1985 Jetta), all of which have traveled extensively in winters across the USA, none of which were garaged, and none of which have any appreciable rust.

The other comes from using roofing tar and spray oils and fighting an on-going battle with rust.

Kool Patch is recommended by the manufacturer (Kool Seal, Inc.) as an undercoating, and many restoration shops who have seen our van have concurred, and were planning on incorporating it into their service. Since Kool Patch isn't actually a hard solid, pin holes and scrapes are "self healing". If anyone has had a negative experience with Kool Patch (such as Chris suggests), I'd like to know. If my recommendation is wrong I need to find another solution. So far, the 1976 we re-did in a few years ago has no new rust, and it has been through two hard northern winters prior to coming to NC.

I would completely agree with Chris, in that the surface has to be spotless before application; we had the body steam cleaned... You must also dedicate yourself to touching up the sealant each spring and winter. No big.

You can find out more about exactly how we applied it at http://bulley-hewlett.com/VWindex/intrir2.html we discuss the steam cleaning earlier in the site.

<< Kool Patch is not a spray. It is actually an asphalt/fiberglass emulsion that spreads on with a coarse bristle brush, like pudding. It never fully "dries" but forms a thick, leathery semi-solid, kinda like roofing tar. Due to the glass fiber strands, it doesn't crack, at least our hasn't and it is 3 years old.

I think Kool Seal warrantees it for 8 years when used as a roofing patch. Durable stuff. >>

no offense - but that's exactly the stuff i WOULDNT use.. you dont want to cake up some thick tar undercoating spread on with a putty knife......you WANT it to be thin. the thicker and heavier it is, the more of the chance it will sag - and seperate from the underlaying metal, and leave pockets for moisture, dirt. here's a case history... my dad has a '80 dodge van. a long time ago, (around '86 when i was in high school) i thought it would be a "really good idea" to smear roofing tar, and spray on foaming crack filler around all the seams, and sheetmetal on the inner rockers, and inside the rear wheelwells, under the van, to "protect it against the salt" now the van is full of holes. more so, than if i had just left it alone. all that roofing tar crap is smeared on there, held water, salt, and dirt behind it, and rotted it out from behind. all it takes is one little pinhole - to start to let water behind that caked on tar and it will start to seperate from the body.. A year ago, i got under there, and pulled off some of the BIG HUNKS of roofing tar that i put on there 10 yrs ago, and they just fell right off, in my hands - i didnt even have to scrape it off - loaded with dirt, and rust holes behind them.

roofing cement is for roofs... BTDT, and was really sorry...
