I am the new owner of an 84 Westy. It overheated SEVERELY recently, motor stalled, coolant boiled out, steam all over, etc. Had to have it towed and now its waiting in a town where no one knows about repairing a VW. It had plenty of coolant. I know because it had been getting a little hot off and on I had checked the coolant. It would heat up, then the temperature would go back down. I plan to have the thermostat checked and the water pump. This is all I know to do. Is there anything else I should consider? Is there some other reason that it would overheat like this? Regarding the thermostat, is this something I can get a standard parts place or am I going to have to get one from a VW specialist? Thanks for any help.
