My 84 Westie is going into hybernation for the winter where I will remove the entire interior so I can sound proof it and insulate it as well as put new paneling up. The new sound system is also going in as well as a dual battery configuration. While all this is going on I am wanting to get my transmission rebuilt. The problem with it is the ring and pinion is starting to go after almost 300,000km, no gear grinding or popping just a constant "grrrrrrr" noise as you drive. So, is this a job for the above average home mechanic or should I leave it to the professionals? I have never opened a transmission before, but I do own the service manual and I am not afraid to purchase the correct tools to do the job. On a related note, it is possible to install a taller final drive so I can install some 27" tires? Thanks in advance!
