...trying to quantify what it is that makes the Vanagon experience. For one it is instant attitude adjustment when you step up behind the wheel. How can a vehicle embody so much cosmic force? There's the view; a lofty perch seeing miles ahead. Anticipation; how you time your throttle action to coincide with the first movement of traffic before you. Little kids lean on windows of adjacent cars and smile, waving or giving you the peace sign (that's a good thing, right?) The daring do of the hard charging darters pays you no never mind as they scream by (only to be caught at the next light!) The chugging of the engine (mine is loud these days) doing a rendition of the little train that says "I think I can, I think I can..." "Mouse", our little, ugly Westy- a four wheeled box with personality! Going in next week for a $150 paint job, then it'll be pretty too. |
