In lieu of a stethoscope, I used a wooden dowel to find the squeal on my alternator. Sound travels better through solids, of course, so if you hold one end to the possible offending machinery and the other to your ear, it's a bit easier to identify.

The same safety precautions apply as for a stethoscope: Don't get it tangled in moving machinery or belts.
