Thanks for the info. It was this site that led me to a partially blocked
gas orifice, which I have since cleaned. I can now get 35 degrees below
ambient temp instead of the 15 I had gotten before, so I'm headed in the
right direction! My goal is to be able to get 50 below ambient temp on
propane.
If anyone has the same symptoms I had, try cleaning that gas orifice.
Mine worked OK on AC, the thermostat worked on gas, the regulator was
properly adjusted, the gas flame would light OK and stay running, and
the cooling fins were clean and unblocked. I did replace the motor on
the fan, but it hasn't been hot enough lately for that to be a factor.
I could barely see the blockage in the orifice with an 8x loupe. Several
soaks in paint thinner followed by several in alcohol, with compressed
air blowouts finally got rid of the blockage. Be sure not to poke
anything thru the orifice, as it's a very precise device and can be
easily damaged.
