The fact that this car was without power steering is the reason the steering
wheel looks older than yours. VW put a giant truck wheel with a tiny horn button
in the middle on cars without power steering, and a more modern wheel with a big
center cushion with horn button on cars with power steering. I replaced the big
truck wheel with a GTI wheel, and without power steering, you need a big dose of
Armstrong to turn the wheel at standing still.
