Larry,
as far as I know, the german engines have a much better litre/power/torque
ratio than those american engines (sorry to say that, but it´s true).
For example the BMW M3 3.2litres, 321hp (german hp).
The Audi V8 3.6 has 250 hp and much more than 300 Nm. My newest V6 2.8 has
280 Nm.
The Audi RS2 with 315 hp has 410 Nm with 2.2litres (great car, a friend owns
one!).

I think a Mercedes, Audi or BMW engine can do much more damage to the tranny
than the buicks (when all have the same litres...).

The vanagon gearbox is designed to stand 200Nm. Don´t matter what stronger
engine you take, the tranny has to be rebuild earlier than with stock
boxers/diesels.
