Michael-
You may want to study the differences between the TD and the Diesel motor
before you simply stick a turbo on yours. Among the differences:
Different Head
Different Head Gasket
Different Head bolts
Different Air filter
Different Injectors
Different Fuel pump
Different Oil pump
Different Oil pan
Different Pistons
Different glow plug system
Different Piston Rings
Oil squirters on the Connecting rods
Oil cooler
And prolly a half dozen others that aren't on the top of my head.
The point? You can make a turbo work on a standard diesel, but not very
well, and not for long. All of the above mentioned engineering differences
were made by professional engineers to give you the most in reliability and
performance. Our TD (Jetta) runs like new, despite having 170k on it. Keep
your sights on a TD if that's what you want. Don't try to build one from a
standard.
Good luck,

Hi Jason,
I'm curious if you have an original turbo diesel Vanagon or if you
switched from a standard diesel to a turbo. I also have an 82 which is a
standard 1.6. Although it runs fine I often wonder how improved the
performance would be if I went to a 1.6TD like you have. Also good luck on
your wiring problem, sorry I can't offer any advise as solving electrical
problems is not my strong suit.
Thanks for any and all input.

>>>Here's the problems: Two problems developed today. First off my
altenator isn't charging. There is voltage coming out of the unit, but
it isn't charging. The alt. light on the dash doesn't come on anymore
either. I don't have access to a Bently for the wiring diagrams either.
Any suggestions where to look?
Second problem, when ever it gets cold outside, my rear turn signal
(driver's side) doesn't work.... No voltage. As soon as it warms up
outside, or the van has been running for awhile, it starts working.
Weird eh?
