The big foam lined bit of tin that goes all the way under the engine and is bolted to the body is there to collect oil, dust and gravel just in case you need to patch your driveway sometime. VW claims it is for noise reduction. I noticed that removing it reduces oil temp on my diesel -> gas conversion. alistair
