VW in Germany told me this: Type2 is the production line of the transporters (as type1 are the bugs). It started in the fifties with the first transporters (split-windows, sambas etc.) That was the type2 T1 (first version of transporters). In the sixties the type2 T2 was the next generation of busses (the round pre-versions of the vanagon). 1979-1992 is the time of our vanagons. They are the type2 T3. 1992-today are the T4s (fourth generation). But I don´t know if they are still type2. I guess not because the whole constellation and design changed (front engine, front drive).

So the vanagon still is a type2. And when ordering parts at a vw dealer, they look for t2-92 (short for type2 T3 year ´92) in their computer. That has been discussed on the german forum over and over. T2 is correct for type2, T3 is correct for 3rd generation... Both is correct. Curios, eh?

Raimund
