While it is very true that cheaper web bulletin board software can make for slow connections and many frustrations, better software, such as WebBoard 4.0, "pages" the messages for speed, along with many other enhancements.

These better quality boards also can e-mail notify you of the day's subjects, and then you can go on-line to view the messages. WebBoard can also be set up as a true listserv for these best of both worlds. The web based message format gives you the option of uploading jpeg and gif files as attachments (like the fine pictures of Buses By the Trail). The huge advantage of these quality http based boards is a fast and efficient search engine. I for one would like a better, faster method of querying the valuable information everyone has contributed to this great list.

If only the V'gon/EV world had access to http board software up to the quality of the subject's vehicles. ;)

Heaven forbid that this list should ever do the same! I find web boards completely unusable for a number of reasons, most especially the enormous amount of time it takes to use them, and ALL OF IT ONLINE! To me web boards are a quintessential example of attempting to make it easy for the complete naif, at the expense (literally, in this case) of everybody else. I tried, honest I really tried to use the Westfalia web board, and it's simply not worth the trouble having to load a page for every single stinking message. This list has had 8200 msgs since 1 July -- I shudder to think what my Internet bills would be if I even attempted to deal with that, not to mention having no time to eat or sleep. Does this mean that the EV people have little to say to each other?

{/Rant off}

Seriously (still) <g> -- can anyone explain why (apparently a lot of) people find web boards attractive? I've found one tiny advantage -- for me, not the users -- in other people's web boards, which is that they are searchable by web search engines; so if I'm trying to find some bit of info/advice in the universe I sometimes get directed to a message on a web board, and it's often interesting. Of course having them searchable also means that correspondents' addresses are available to spam address-harvesting programs...
