Just FYI... I have been using an Audi filter listed for (among other Audi's) the '86 Audi 5000 2.22L turbo. It is the same filter VW lists for the Vanagon but it has an internal back flow valve that holds more oil in the filter after the van is shut off (this is my possibly simplistic understanding). It seems to reduce the occasional cold start tapping, particularly when starting and running the van during winter storage. Often the filter also has a trick "nut" on the end for easier install and removal without a filter wrench.
