Thanks for the info but I do understand that it is almost a completely different motor. I was interested in the preformance improvement in going from a non-turbo to a turbo motor in the vanagon.

The point? You can make a turbo work on a standard diesel, but not very well, and not for long. All of the above mentioned engineering differences were made by professional engineers to give you the most in reliability and performance. Our TD (Jetta) runs like new, despite having 170k on it. Keep your sights on a TD if that's what you want. Don't try to build one from a standard.
