I have oil temp and a volt meter on my 88 Syncro. The oil temp and a volt meter will also go in my 84 Westie this winter when it is in "dry dock".

I have an oil pressure gauge in my 80 Caddy and 85 Cabriolet. Both are good, but your Vanagon already has a decent oil pressure warning system. If it goes below 0.3BAR the oil pressure light and buzzer will go on... works for me.

The oil temp gauge is a good indicator on how hard you are working your engine, but if you were really interested in that I would get a vacuum gauge as the coolant temp gauge also gives you a good indication of how hard you are working the engine.

If you really want to be clever, you could install a toggle switch and use the existing temp gauge to measure both oil and water temps!
