Subject: Clutch Pilot Bearing problem solved!
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed
Thanks to all who e-mailed me with helpful suggestions. The response was
remarkable and led me to a prompt solution. Bob Donalds and Ron Salmon
quickly confirmed that the bearing is indeed supposed to be open (both ends)
to allow the transmission shaft to pass through.
Since Boston Engine is less than 20 miles from me, I decided to call to see
if I could source the part there. Bob Donalds graciously offered to let me
drive right over to pick up the part! Bob was most accomodating and helpful,
providing me with helpful suggestions on how to do the job right. He
convinced me to replace the rear seals that I would have otherwise avoided
after my experience with the pilot bearing.
I've since removed the bad bearing and reinstalled the proper one along with
the rear seal and o ring. I hope to have the tranny back in the vehicle and
be back on the road again tomorrow.
My hats off to Bob, Ron, Karl, Eric and all the other list members who
responded to my e-mail!
Gary

Subject: Help Clutch Pilot Bearing question!
Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 11:52:36 EDT
I'm in the middle of replacing the clutch on my '87 GL. The Sachs Clutch kit
I bought from BusDepot came with a Pilot bearing that has a closed end. I
very foolishly decuded to replace the existing bearing which was a "through
hole" design. I installed it assuming it was the proper part (bad
assumption?). I'm having difficulty fully mating the tranny to the engine
and suspect the input shaft of the tranny may be bottoming on the back of
the new bearing.
Does anyone know if this style of bearing will work or do I need to
remove(sigh) and replace it with the open style bearing?
Gary
