Gary, Don't feel too bad about having to replace the incorrect pilot bearing. Last year my son and I tackled a clutch job on his '84 S-10 Blazer, 4 WD, absolutely the worst job I have ever done on a vehicle (even had to jack the body 3" up off the frame at the front to get access)! I inadvertently installed the pilot bearing BACKWARDS, not realizing one end had a chamfer to facilitate the main shaft sliding in. This first time we tried to put the gearbox (with transfer case on, about 120 pounds) it went in slightly misaligned and the main shaft hit the edge of the pilot bearing and deformed it (hence the need for a chamfer). We tried for three days (we had to quit in frustration and exhaustion after each attempt) to get that sucker in, re-installed the clutch, aligned everything, etc., and finally I pulled that pilot out and found the mistake! This was my first, and hopefully last, five day clutch job!! However, my upper body strength is much improved. You are better off knowing what the problem is.
