Sean,

Sounds like you're green resistor behind the left hand headlight has
cratered.  Take a look and you'll probably see a crack or worse.
Dealers have them in stock for $10 and change or so.  Check the archives
for more details, pns etc.

Fan speed resistor, is, I beleive, the proper term.
