Where can one purchase the hall sender? Is it the same for all WB years (84-91) or does the part vary from year to year?

I had one go bad on my '84 a few months ago and I exchanged the distributor with the one from my parts van. The symptoms I'm currently experiencing might mean I have another flaky one on my '87.

I concur. I have a 90 vanagon that had the same problem, especially on long trip up to the mountains (coincidence?). replacing the Hall effect sender cured it. Graham 90 GL Country Homes Conversion
