Symptoms I had: In the beginning engine would cut out during long trips up to the Sierras; it would then stumble, and eventually get going again. At first I thought it was something to do with the altitude. I'd come back home with no problems for another few months. Then it would stall on cool mornings about 30 secs after starting. After cranking a bit, it would get going agin and be OK for a few days. Eventually, it died and wouldn't restart at all. Most of this happened under warranty and then for another couple of years while I was still foolish enough to have the VW dealer service it. Under warranty, I got new plugs, wires, coil, you name it,so in a way it was good, but they never found the problem. When it died and I had it towed to a local independant VW shop they told me right away - Hall sensor or computer black box. Luckily it was the former.

Good luck, Graham 90 GL automatic Country Homes camper
