Karl,

That van was probably an 84-ish Vanagon. My son's 84 has the front mounted AC unit, it was factory installed. All of the hoses, etc., run up the pillar between the passenger front door and the slider. I know for a fact that it is a factory unit as it is described in the owner's manual.
