This stuff just pulls out of the rubber (you don't have to remove the rubber). If the rubber is still good then I would just leave it alone (it won't leak and then you just have the "cal-look" which all later model Vanagons had anyway). Don't worry about the line in the rubber after the trim is removed. I have the "cal-look" rubber on my Carat from the factory and it has a little line in it too where the trim recess used to be. You could even just remove all the trim to make the van match and look better. If you get new trim it lasts for about a year before fading out again (not worth fooling with in my opinion).
