I recently installed the new dash pod with tachometer (purchased from Bus Depot)into my 84GL. The re-wiring instructions recently posted by David Beierl worked great! Thanks Dave! I ran a few extra wires from the dash to the engine compartment to be used later for a VDO O.P. gauge and a high pressure oil sender. In the engine compartment I grounded the H.P. oil sender wire (from new dash connector: pin 12) for the time being to prevent the buzzer and LED from "going off" at higher RPMs. I re-installed the original speedo from my '84 into the new dash pod. The electronics in the new speedo (part the dynamic oil pressure system) doesn't actually sense speed or otherwise depend on the speedometer mechanics. The electronics PCB in the new speedo can easily be removed and mounted on the back of the old speedo. I made a cardboard sheild and covered it with duct tape to protect the PCB from getting dirty or shorting to anything. There is a small "open" relay on the board that needs to be protected from contamination and mechanical contact. As far as I can see the additional electronics is simply mounted in the new speedo because of space limitations in the tach. In order to take advantage of the dynamic oil pressure system, I plan to purchase and "tee" the (second) high pressure sender, used on the 2.1 engine, with the standard low pressure sender located between the pushrod tubes. I have to source a SS hose (or extension) with a "tee" connection to do this because of the limited space between the pushrod tubes. Gary Gary McEachern, Reading Ma.
