Ken,

Were you backpacking your Vanagon? <G> Mountain height yes, however I don't think there are any Sierra Nevada highway passes in the 12,000 foot range. Tioga Pass at 9,945 feet is about the highest I can think of. For a road a tad over 12,000 feet try Trail Ridge Road in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park.
