You may consider CLEANING the EGR rather than replacing it. Further, I have
found the rest of the system often fully clogged, in particular the
distribution pipes inside the intake manifold. Here is a cleaning procedure
for all.

Good morning list.  My '81 will soon have it's new complete stock exaust
system installed (purchased from the ever-helpful Bus Depot!) but what
about the EGR filter?  I want to have clean emissions, hence the engine
rebuild and complete new exaust system.  Questions for the list:  Is there
a better and cheaper replacement for the EGR filter setup than the
aftermarket $170.00 copy of the original VW $239.00 item?  By the way, the
vw dealer in Atlanta said the vw ones are obsolete/no longer available, and
the dealer here uses aftermarket brands when needed.
