Ok volk's,

So maybe it's time to rejuvinate that old AFM of mine. I've heard there's both a rich man's slolution (gold plated VW "black box" made especialy for this problem of worn out AFM carbon potetiometer) as well as a poor man's (capacitor placed to smooth the jitters on the ECU input from the AFM). Since I'd sure hate to be screwed again by my local VW garage (they change everyting in site, not knowing what to do...), I'd like to get opinions and satisfaction levels for both solutions. I've also found in the archives that someone was working on generating the schamatic of this black box (said it was a simple single IC band passs filter) but eventually he gave it up. Has anyone got the schematics of the original or home made solution? I have an idea that might enable me to design a "AFM fault indicator" (I hate replacing parts without knowing the true reason for the fault. I might miss the true reason and get hit again in the middle of nowhere...). It is based on the idea of reversing the capacitor solution function (i.e. it detects when the capacitor is needed). But maybe someone has already done this. Info, anyone? How much does an AFM cost anyway?

regards, Amnon
