Just got my 1987 Vanagon emissions checked here in NY. The new test includes running on a dyno. Here are the results compared to my 1982 carburettored Toyota with 4cyl 2.4 liter 22R engine. Vanagon: HC Limit 3.2 tested 0.14 CO Limit 80 tested 9.15 NOx Limit 11.5 tested 0.00 Toyota: HC Limit 2 tested 0.15 CO Limit 60 tested 12.15 NOx Limit 7.5 tested 0.58 From this can be seen that the Vanagon is cleaner in every respect, but the Toyota is certainly not a 'very dirty' vehicle for its age. The Vanagon has 125,000 miles with around 2500 miles on a rebuilt engine and transmission. The Toyota has 95,000 miles and has never had any engine work done. I would be interested in hearing the readings from any other Vanagon owbner in New York. |
