Sometimes, if the CV's arent too bad you can swap them around so they turn the other way. This will wear the races and bearings differently and you may be able to get another season out of them if not more. I did this about 2 months ago after similar symptoms as yours. The noises have disappeared. A similar case happened to my 87 Golf Diesel about 5 years ago. I swapped the CV's around and they are still going strong to this day after 110K miles (since the swap). Make sure you clean them thoroughly and pack lots of CV grease. I think there was a detailed post on this about a month ago by Joel Walker, so try the archives aswell.
