VW Shares Falls After 3rd-Qtr Net Drops on Price Wars Bloomberg News

Volkswagen AG's shares fell 3.6 percent after Europe's largest automaker indicated third-quarter profit fell 4 percent on higher costs... VW's shares have fallen 20 percent this year, making it the third-worst performer in Germany's Dax Xetra index of 30 major companies. ... The company said it expects 1999 profit to be ``about the same'' as last year's. ... In the U.S., the company had its best results since 1974, as Volkswagen-brand unit sales rose 40.2 percent to 239,383 vehicles. Audi's unit sales rose 44.7 percent to 46,746 vehicles. North American sales rose 27.7 percent to 404,733. ... Volkswagen said it would continue to invest in development of new models, even if domestic and international demand weakened and dragged on profit.
