When I bought my wife a New Beetle for our anniversary (our first new car ever; love it!) , the dealer mentioned how much a replacement "switchblade" key cost if you lost/broke one. I don't recall the exact price (about $30??) but it was high enough to make me glad that I can get replacements for my Vanagon key at the local hardware store for a buck. Apparantly the Beetle keys are dealer-only and not easily duplicated in a pinch (or at a reasonable price).
