I'm a locksmith specializing in Volkswagen. As far as adapting the new high security key to the Vanagon, I won't say it can't be done, but it is not really practical. Due to the construction of the wafers in the new key, the plug is different. A machinist could rework the housings of the Vanagon locks to accept the plug, but it would get expensive. Also, the mounting of the tail pieces on the two locks are different. All in all, it just is not a practical thing to do, but with enough time and money anything is possible. Someone on the list replied that only a dealer could duplicate the new keys. This is not true. There are several key machines on the market for locksmith use for this type of key. The machine costs nearly $1500, and key blanks are in the $8 range when bought in quantities of 50. Dupe costs of $35-$50 are not out of line. Be aware, though, that cost for the 2000 year model VW keys will be substantially higher, due to activation of the ignition transponder system, requiring not only a correct mechanical key, but the correct electronic proramming of the key itself. I would not be surprised to see a dupe cost in the neighborhood of $70 for that. The transponder blanks are just now becoming available for the 2000 cars, and the programmers are beginning to come on line also. If I can answer any other VW lock questions, please post or visit my web site at http://www.steveslockshop.com. I am familiar with both of these locks; I have an '84 Westy and a 2000 New Beetle.
