Neither should trig be presented as chicken scatch on the blackboard. Without a thought to real world application, people like me and many others will fall asleep.

You end up with a few theorists that can make chicken scratch all day long and not actually solve a real world problem and a few others that take all the chicken scratch time and solve the problem via trial and error at the behest of the Mother Of Invention and the majority who ain't got a clue. No one is well served by the a bland education process, and least of all the society that allows such a low value process.
