Ken, I've seen a laptop set up like you describe. I have a friend who is a regional trouble shooter mechanic for Mercedes Benz. He goes around from dealer to dealer fixing the cars that they cannot or will not. He gets a new MB company car every couple months to drive and to become familiar with the new models. One day he drove up in a SEL convertible with an IBM Think Pad laptop plugged into the cars computer with a special harness. With the laptop he could get every detail of what was going on in the engine-temp, RPM, CO content, oil pressure, everything. He said it was of particular value to him because it gave him specific details of engine operation when driving and under load. I'm sure it was an expensive little unit, but its been done, maybe it was put together with off the shelf parts/programs. I'll ask him about it.
