I did this once on my son's Saab 99. We wired a 10 gauge wire to the back for a tube amp, and the wire got pinched under the rear seat when he had some passengers. We fused it at the amp end instead of the end we attached to the alternator post, which was another stupid move.

That short drew current from the battery to the alternator and melted the entire wire harness. We were able to do what you did, and the car ran for another two years before it was broadsided (with no injuries).

Indeed, a fun and educational experience.
