No problem! A Golf / Jetta / Passat / Audi alternator will fit, just swap the pulleys. I do this all the time with my I4 engine conversions. Currently I have a 120A Passat Alternator in my Syncro - I4 engine mind you - but the same size as a 90A Vanagon alt. The Diesels are a little tighter, but I'm sure a 90A will fit.
