Yes they were sold here,although I don't know over what period and I believe they worked very well. I saw one come up for sale about 6 months ago,all reconditioned and mounted on a trailer.I think the seller was asking $1800Aus which would be about $1200US. Given what the compressor was capable of delivering,I get the impression it was a pretty good deal,and a classic as well...:) I've seen a few home made ones as well over the years. I've also seen a VW industrial eng. powering a concrete saw.Came in for a service while I was getting the WBX done one time. It had some serious air filters on it as cement dust isn't real kind to engines.It had some pretty regular service intervals as I recall. Steve O. Blue Mountains NSW Aus.
