Peter; Is there a big air bubble in the reservoir that will not bleed out? If so you may have combustion gasses being forced into the coolant jacket. This causes a bubble inside the engine exposing the top of the cylinders , hence the running hot. You can buy a kit to test for gasses, take it to a friendly mechanic with an emission testing machine to "sniff" the overflow tank or affix a balloon over the vent of the overflow tank. If it inflates.....bad news. Drive Safely & Good Luck Ken Lewis<Kernersville,NC>86 VW crewcab;60 T-5 Coupe
