This is usually caused by a bad pinion bearing. The pinion shaft is becoming misalign with the ring gear and jamming the works.

here's the symptom,

Backing up in my 85 westy, push the clutch in so i can stop and shift into first, but just as i push in the clutch the van screeches to a halt and makes an awful noise. A little later while backing up i had no problems??????

Should i start saving for a tranny?

thanks john
