I lived in Alaska for 30 years and never had the necessity to use chains or studded tires....snow tires yes but not the other two.....until I bought my '85GL van. That little sucker spun me around in the middle of the highway the first time I had it out with a little black ice on the road. I immediately had studded winter Goodyears tires(don't remember which ones) with the tacky rubber put on it and I never ever had a winter driving problem again. Like it was glued to the road.
