The '82 Diesel that I have now (presently in the shop getting a T/D Jetta transplant) was leaking from the same exact places when i took it out of storage (after two years). I leave off the tin also. The Diesel noise is a bit louder without it there, but I didn't like it b/c it was just a place where all kinds of crap got deposited (oil, sticks, leaves, etc.) If you don't mind the extra noise, then go for it.
